A Brief History
- The solar tax credit was first introduced through the Energy Policy Act of 2005
- It gave homeowners the ability to recover up to 30% on solar installation, but was capped at $2,000
- In 2008, the $2,000 cap was lifted
- In 2022, the Inflation Reduction Act extended the full 30% credit on solar installation through 2032
- Currently, a recent budget bill passed the U.S. House of Representatives, which if enacted, would end the solar tax credit this year!
What Homeowners Need to Know
If the proposed legislation passes the Senate the financial return on home solar investments will drop drastically. Owners would not be reimbursed for installment costs after Dec. 31, 2025.
Industry leaders, including Tesla, have publicly opposed the legislation, warning that it could stall the nation’s progress on clean energy and undermine private-sector investment in solar technology.
